Does your own professional development consist of attending a traditional conference once a year and reading a few magazine articles from time to time?   If you haven’t already experienced the power of social media to connect with like-minded people to  find out more about what is happening worldwide in the learning industry and profession, here are 10 ideas to kick-start your own professional development - with some links to some free resources to get you started.
  1. Monitor the web for information about topics of interest, using Google Alerts
  2. Sign up to Twitter and connect with workplace learning professionals from around the world to find out what they are doing as well as share your own thoughts and experiences. Participate in synchronous live chats. 
  3. Keep up to date with what leading industry experts are thinking and practitioners are doing around the world in the field of Learning & Development by reading their blog postings.
  4. Subscribe to the blogs you want to read on a regular basis using a RSS reader like Google Reader, so that you’ll be alerted as soon as new postings are made.
  5. Sign up to Facebook, connect with people and organizations, and join groups.
  6. View presentations given at conferences and other events, and share these with your colleagues.
  7. Participate in an online webinar and interact with the presenters and other participants.
  8. Sign up to LinkedIn, connect with people and organizations, and join groups
  9. Write your own blog about your experiences in the L&D industry, by reflecting on what you have been doing by linking to and/or embedding resources, you’ll also be helping others to learn from you too. It’s as much about giving back to the L&D community. Sync your blog with your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other accounts so that your postings are automatically syndicated across the Web.
